The Windsor-Essex Community Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

Is designed to help you learn how to manage your heart disease and improve your health through exercise and lifestyle adjustments. Although exercise is a major focus during the rehabilitation session, other areas that are addressed include:

The program generally meets four times a week. The actual length depends on your type of heart disease and any complications you might have had. Many heart patients participate because they are at high risk of a heart attack or stroke. They want to keep their blood pressure under control. Others are diabetic and at risk of further heart problems. Many come to support loved ones who have heart disease.

Each session is 1 to 1-1/2 hours long.

Each person is given an individualized exercise prescription based on your cardiac and general physical condition. Your personal needs and goals will also be addressed. During each session, your heart rate blood pressure and symptoms will be continuously monitored. Medical supervision will be provided by a physician, registered nurse and rehab staff.

Along with the exercise sessions, you and your family will be provided with education pertaining to your heart disease and how to make the necessary life style changes to better manage it.

The Windsor-Essex Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is located at the University of Windsor, St. Denis Athletic Centre. (School of Human Kinetics) on College Avenue, near Huron Church Road.
