Welcome to the home page of the University of Windsor Developmental Psychology Programme!
Developmental Psychology is a specialized undergraduate major within the Psychology department that focuses on child, adolescent, and adult development. Courses emphasize different developmental periods and various aspects of both normal and abnormal development. In addition to course work, students have the opportunity to participate in ongoing research groups and are encouraged to apply their classroom skills by getting involved in community organizations. In their fourth year, students can apply to participate in the Developmental Psychology Practicum in which they review learning-based behaviour change strategies and apply them in community placements.
This programme is well-suited for students interested in pursuing higher educational degrees, such as a Master’s or Ph.D. in Developmental or Clinical Psychology, as well as those who plan to enter the work force after obtaining their Bachelor’s degree. This programme also helps prepare students for life roles such as parenting, caring for an elderly parent, or communicating across generations.
A Developmental Psychology Bachelor’s degree can open the doors to some exciting careers. Here are just a few examples of careers that have been chosen by Developmental Psychology students (some careers require higher degrees, such as an M.A. or Ph.D.):
- Professor in Developmental or Clinical Psychology
- Clinical Psychologist (e.g., private practice or psychologist working in a hospital)
- Teacher
- Researcher in Developmental Psychology
- Child care worker
- Social worker
- Physician (e.g., Pediatrician or Gerontologist)
- Nurse
- Elder care
And these are only a few examples of what you can do with a Developmental Psychology background. The skills that are taught in this programme allow a great deal of flexibility with career options that extend beyond Psychology, education, and health care professions. Perhaps you are interested in doing marketing for toy companies or working with children and families in legal settings? A Developmental Psychology background can be a great asset in making you more marketable to potential employers.
