Discovery Program for First-year Undeclared Majors Many students use their first year in university to explore different academic subjects. In the Discovery Program, students without a declared major take a pair of specially-designed courses in the Fall semester, and one course in the Winter semester, alongside courses in their area of study.
All Arts and Social Sciences students are expected to register for Foundations of Academic Writing I (01-150)in the Fall semester, and Foundations of Academic Writing II (01-151) in the Winter semester. These courses have been mandated because the literacy and writing skills they provide are essential to success at university, and because they provide the communication proficiency welcomed by future employers.
Discovery Program students also take Understanding the Contemporary World (01-120), which applies historical analysis to themes such as modernism, globalism, and the information age, while incorporating disciplines such as fine art, literature, music, and popular culture.
Additional first-year support is provided in small tutorials to help with study skills, objective-setting, and motivation, and a social network to engage students in their university years and beyond.
