Falling in Love
Art Gallery of Windsor
Shahida Nurullah, vocalist
Tad Weed, piano
Diego Rivera, saxophone
Donald Mayberry, bass
Sean Dobbins, drums
Fall in love with Shahida Nurullah. It’s not just her fabulous voice that will win your heart; it’s her respect for melody and lyrics. “I love Sarah Vaughan and Tony Bennett. I'll do some of the songs from the American Songbook that they covered, as well as a selection of really beautiful compositions by Brazilian composers Marcos Valle, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Eumir Deodato and Dori Caymmi. We'll pull out some pop songs from the sixties and seventies and songs by jazz pianists Horace Silver, Tad Dameron and Errol Garner.”

Sunday Nov. 16/08 at 2:00 pm
Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time
Assumption University Chapel
David Palmer, piano,
Lillian Scheirich, violin
Andrew McIntosh, cello
James Ormston, clarinet
In 2008, the music world celebrates the centennial of the French composer Olivier Messiaen. Such diverse elements as Gregorian chant, Hindu rhythms, birdsong and his own colour sense combine in his unusual and fascinating music. Hear a rare performance of his most popular work, the Quartet for the End of Time, written in 1941 when he was a prisoner of war in Germany.

Sunday Feb. 1/09 at 2:00 pm
Philip Adamson & Friends
A Program of English Chamber Music for ‘Cello
Assumption University Chapel
Marian Tanau, violin
Mario DiFiore, cello
Philip Adamson, piano

Concert Programme:
Thomas Arne ~ Sonata in B flat
Howard Ferguson (arr.) ~ Five Irish Folk Tunes
Frank Bridge ~ Sonata for Violoncello and Piano
Malcolm Arnold ~ Trio for Violin, 'Cello and Piano, Op.54
John Ireland ~ Trio # 2 for Violin, 'Cello and Piano

Although British society has long been an enthusiastic consumer and supporter of music, it was long considered an activity best left to “foreign” artists, since a career in music was not considered an occupation appropriate for the monied classes. Not until the twentieth century, when there occurred a veritable explosion of musical activity amongst native-born English men and women, was there more than a handful of these people successfully engaged in the music profession. A survey of English ’cello music turns up precious few examples before 1900; the past century, by comparison, contains a wide selection of fine pieces. Not surprisingly, then, this programme contains ’cello pieces and trios which are principally from the past one hundred years.
