GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

Scholarships Officers: The Scholarships Officers for the 2011-12 academic year are TBA

Scholarships Bulletin Board: Notices for the deadlines of major scholarships are generally distributed to all graduate students and to all faculty with appropriate advanced warning. These notices and descriptions of additional awards are posted on the Scholarships Bulletin Board located outside room 288-3 or to the left of the department office room 273-1, as well as on this page (see below).

Advice on completing scholarship applications: It is to your advantage to follow the instructions when you are completing applications for scholarships. Incomplete applications forms will not be considered. If black ink is required, use black ink. If official transcripts are required, request that official transcripts be forwarded. If information is requested on the application, provide it.

A number of other foundations offer awards for graduate students throughout the academic year. For details, contact our graduate secretary, scholarships officers or the Graduate Studies Office.

IMPORTANT DUE DATES & DEADLINES - Updated Sept. 23, 2011

The deadlines for receipt of applications in our office for the upcoming external scholarship competitions are as follows:

1. Students must ensure sure that they are applying to the appropriate agency. If they, or you, are not sure, please contact NSERC, SSHRC or CIHR and they can advise you based on a one-page proposal submitted to the agency. Applications submitted to the wrong agency are rejected.

2. Students may submit an application to only ONE agency - this is a rule which has serious repercussions if ignored, and affects the university's future application quotas for the tri-council agencies. It is a rule that is strictly enforced by all three granting agencies - applications submitted to more than one agency are always discovered and can happen especially when students apply for a CIHR Doctoral Award, which they do so directly, and then to NSERC or SSHRC through the university.

3. Students nominated for a Vanier CGS at one agency can only apply to that agency’s postgraduate scholarships programs, not to another agency’s postgraduate scholarships programs. For example, students nominated for a 2012 NSERC Vanier CGS can only apply to the 2012 NSERC PGS/CGS programs, not to the SSHRC or CIHR postgraduate scholarships; furthermore, their doctoral studies can only be supported by either the Vanier or the CGS award not both.
