What is Intellectual Property?

Generally defined, intellectual property or IP is the name given to the rights that accompany creations of the mind. Further, as one might understand, there are different categories for different types of creations of the mind within the general area of intellectual property. The following is a list of the different categories:
  • Trademarks
  • Copyright
  • Patents
  • Trade Secrets
  • Industrial Designs
  • Internet Domain Names
  • Plant Breeder’s Rights
  • Integrated Circuits Topography

However, the first three – trademarks, copyrights and patents are the most commonly encountered forms of intellectual property and will therefore be the focus of this website.

How do I know if I have an issue that falls within the area of Intellectual Property?

We have designed a set of questions on the Identify Your Issue page. Going through these questions should give you an idea of whether you have an issue that relates to copyrights, trademarks or patents. What is Innovation Law?

Innovation Law is also known as Information Technology (IT) or Cyberlaw. Generally defined, it is the name given to areas of the law that deal with legal issues surrounding the internet and other digital technologies. Innovation or IT law includes matters relating to intellectual property but also encompasses the following non-exhaustive subject areas:
  • Online Privacy
  • Online Defamation
  • Electronic Commerce
  • Computer and Internet Security
