Dean Elman to stay on for an additional year

Provost and Vice-President, Academic, Leo Groarke announced yesterday that Prof. Bruce P. Elman will extend his term as dean in the Faculty of Law through the 2010/11 academic year.

Dr. Groarke thanked Elman for his willingness to continue to serve the faculty and the University while the search for a new dean of law continues. "Since coming to Windsor, Bruce has been extraordinarily active in supporting many key initiatives in the Faculty of Law, including the dual Canadian and American J.D. program; the university's Mediation Services; the Intellectual Property Legal Information Network; and the Law Enforcement Accountability Project" said Groarke. "He has built strong relationships with our law alumni, and successfully encouraged them to fund capital, scholarship, and service improvements at the school."

Elman, an expert in constitutional law, began the first of his two five-year terms as dean in 2000. Before coming to Windsor, he was the Belzberg Professor of Constitutional Studies and Chair of the Centre for Constitutional Studies at the University of Alberta, where he received the 1999 Tevie H. Miller Award for Teaching Excellence. Elman has been Visiting Professor of Law and Canadian Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem—where he received an award for teaching excellence—and a visiting scholar at Stanford Law School and Japan's Niigata University.

In his role as acting dean, Elman will continue to chair the boards of Legal Assistance of Windsor, Community Legal Aid, and University of Windsor Mediation Service. He has served as chair of the Ontario Council of Law Deans and a member of the Ad hoc Ministerial Advisory Group to the Minister of Justice for Canada.
