Windsor Law Third at Sopinka Cup
The Windsor Law team of Eric Costaris and Jeff LaPorte (both Law III), with Andrea MacGillivary (Law II) as alternate, placed third at the Sopinka Cup competition on the weekend of March 13, 2010 in Ottawa. The team was coached by Scott Kerwin '06 of the Windsor Crown Attorney's Office. The Universite de Moncton finished first with the University of Saskatchewan finishing second.
The Sopinka Cup is a national trial moot competition. The team had earned the right to compete in the Sopinka Cup by placing second in the Arnup Cup Trial Advocacy Moot. This was the second year in a row that Windsor has competed in the Sopinka Cup. Mr. Kerwin commented on the team: "They did an excellent job representing the school. The students selected for the Arnup/Sopinka Cup Competitions keep improving the school's reputation amongst the assessors."
The case mooted was a 2nd degree murder case involving a bar room fight and including a self-defence argument. Further, the problem included evidentiary issues such as a KGB statement, Character evidence, Corbet applications, post-offence conduct, a Vetrovec warning, and Hearsay.
Congratulations Eric, Jeff, and Andrea!
