Technological Studies Research Guide
What is Technology Education?
“General education programs concerned with the study of technology, the use of technical means and processes to solve problems, and the impact of technology on individuals and society” (ERIC Thesaurus, 2008)
How do I research Technology Education?
Here are a few suggestions for starting your research. The following is not comprehensive, but provides some ideas for getting you started. For additional assistance please visit the Reference Desk on the Main Floor of Leddy Library.
Resources in Leddy Library:
Leddy Library’s Online Catalogue
To locate books, check the catalogue by “Subject Heading” using the heading, “technology study and teaching”. You can also do a “Boolean Command” search combining words such as, “technology AND design”, “design AND industry”, etc.
Databases
For finding articles, search educational databases. The major database for educational topics is ERIC, although the Google Scholar database may also be helpful. When using ERIC (or any other database) choose words that closely describe the type of information that you need. It’s a matter of combining the most relevant words, such as: “technology AND design”, “education AND technology”.
Resources on the Internet:
Google is a helpful search engine for finding relevant websites. The following sites are extremely helpful and were found by searching these words in Google: “technology education Ontario”. Of course, you can vary these for narrower or broader searches on your own (eg. “technology education Canada”).
The Ontario Council for Technology Education (OCTE)
“The Ontario Council for Technology Education (OCTE) was formed to represent teaching of technology related subjects from K-12 in the province of Ontario.”
The Web site is valuable for it’s very useful Web links. To find them, go to OCTE’s Web page. Then click on Resources, followed by another click on Links. This brings you to a list of links divided into six categories. Here are the categories with a sample link for each:
