
Mandate
The primary mission of Rare Books and Special Collections is to acquire, to preserve, to organise and to make available its valuable holdings. These important and limited publications have been carefully and selectively housed in this specialized location, because of their rarity, value, information significance, medium, and irreplaceability.
Location and Public Hours
Rare Books and Special Collections is located in Room G-100 of the Leddy Library Building, at the University of Windsor. Public Reading Hours are Monday to Friday, 1:30 to 4:00 p.m.
Visitors are required to abide by the Rules and Regulations.

The contents of Rare Books and Special Collections are listed in the Leddy Library Catalogue (OPAC).
Criteria for Selection
- Works published by local authors, by local publishers, and about the local area. The local area includes, but is not confined to, Essex, Lambton and Kent Counties.
- Canadian works, particularly monographs published before 1900.
- American works published before 1850.
- European works published before 1800.
- Significant first editions.
- Publications of aesthetic importance (eg. fine-printing, unique illustrations, or fine bindings).
- Limited editions of value.
- Fine facsimiles of important publications.
- Special Press publications
Areas of Subject Strength
There are several areas of subject strength. Examples include:
- History of southwestern Ontario
- Manufacturing in southwestern Ontario
- Agriculture in southwestern Ontario
- Labour community in southwestern Ontario
- History of southwestern Ontario
- Anti-slavery, slavery and the Underground Railway
