Abstract (100 words or less):
Models of modern engineering systems are often of a very large scale. The significant interactions in most of these systems are however localized; this manifests itself in the sparsity of the (large-sized) matrices that parametrize the models, or in the sparsity of their inverses. We present engineering examples where such models arise, followed by a discussion of sparsification techniques, and the exploitation of sparsity for analysis and simulation.
