Abstract (100 words or less):
We present case studies that illustrate the difficulties of
developing and evaluating optimization software for the
solution of large optimization problems. Our presentation
centers on TRON, a trust region Newton code for the solution
of large bound-constrained optimization problems, but our
results have general applicability. In particular, we
present the results of a series of computational experiments
designed to measure the performance of general nonlinear
optimization solvers. Our aim is to answer a basic
question: Are we making progress in optimization?
