Abstract (100 words or less): | | We present theoretical and computation results for the optimization of the laser field that can perform a quantum algorithm (Grover's search algorithm) in an alkali atom. This is an important result because the quantum search algorithm scales as the square-root of the size of the database (N), whereas the best classical algorithm scales only as N/2. For the first time, we extend optimal control theory to optimize algorithms (distinct from multi-target optimization), and use it to design electromagnetic fields that can perform fast and efficient quantum algorithms ( C. Rangan and P.H. Bucksbaum, Physical Review A v.64 , p.33417 (2001).) |
