Abstract (100 words or less):
We will present recent results and future work on the segmentation of a medical images into different tissue types. Our main purpose is to separate different tissue types reconstructed from collected Magnetic Resonance (MR) signals corrupted by white noise from the MR machine and distortions caused by the presence of the external magnetic field inhomogeneity. Previously, we formulated the tissue segmentation as a least-squares problem, and the experiment design as a nonlinear, nonconvex semidefinite optimization problem. We continue this work by incorporating the magnetic field variation. We propose a Total Variation based optimization problem subject to some physical constraints arising from our imaging model and propose to solve the problem by simultaneously estimating the tissue density and field inhomogeneity.
