UWindsor says welcome with week of activities

Students new to the University of Windsor will have a chance to get oriented to campus life over the next few days as Windsor Welcome Week activities kick off Sunday, September 5.

“We want our new students to explore and investigate their own opportunities for success on campus, and we want to offer time for them to have fun and feel welcome,” says Beth Oakley, director of the Educational Development Centre. “When they feel like they are part of the UWindsor community, and realize they have friends and support, they’re more likely to succeed in the university careers.”

Oakley says activities are aimed at helping students living on and off campus to develop a sense of belonging to the university community, even before classes start on September 9. Highlights of the week’s activities include:
  • Sunday, September 5. Residence move-in day, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. As well, students are encouraged to attend a presentation by Harlan Cohen, author of The Naked Roommate and 107 Other Issues You Might Run into in College.
  • Monday, September 6. Pancake breakfast sponsored by the University of Windsor Students' Alliance (UWSA), International Student Orientation, and the E3 Music Festival.
  • Tuesday, September 7. Adrenaline Rush features something for everyone—grab some free food from the snack tent, test your agility in the Sports Challenge or get twisted in a giant game of Twister!
  • Wednesday, September 8. Academic orientation for all faculties and programs takes place in the morning, followed at 3 p.m. by Welcoming Convocation, where the incoming class banner is raised and students are formally welcomed to the University of Windsor—plus the Alumni Association will choose the winner of a semester's free tuition.
  • Thursday, September 9. First day of classes. Grab some freebies at the Vendor Fair in the CAW Student Centre courtyard, watch bachelors and bachelorettes seek love through the Dating Game, and check out activities all day long.
  • Friday, September 10. Meet the back-to-back Memorial Cup champion Windsor Spitfires, join the Campus Community Clean-up, and listen to the competitors in UWindsor Idol.
  • Saturday, September 11. Shinerama Shine Day. From 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., UWindsor students will participate in the largest post-secondary fundraiser in Canada, taking their shoe-shining skills to the streets of Windsor to benefit cystic fibrosis charities. The Lancer Loot auction will allow students to turn in their Welcome Week participation ballots for some really great prizes.
