 | (WINDSOR, ONTARIO, TUESDAY, MAY 11, 2005) – University of Windsor President Ross Paul says Premier Dalton McGuinty and the Honourable Mary Anne Chambers, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, are to be commended for their clear support of post-secondary education, shown through an infusion of funds for the sector in today’s provincial budget.
Dr. Paul says investment in post-secondary education is vital to Windsor’s economy, both in job creation and the training of future community leaders. He says the province’s commitment to a $6.2 billion investment in universities, colleges, training, apprentices and students by 2009/10 should help close the gap between Ontario universities and their competitors, both in other provinces and abroad.
Specifically Paul applauds:
• The doubling of student assistance;
• a commitment to substantially expand graduate education by 12,000 students in 2007/08 and 14,000 by 2009/10, through new investments of $220 million annually by 2009/10;
• $50 million annually in fund-matching to establish endowments for student financial assistance, taking into consideration the limited fund-raising capacity of smaller institutions;
• multi-year funding, which greatly enhances the University of Windsor’s ability to plan for the future.
“The University of Windsor is committed to doing its part to ensure Ontario’s future prosperity,” Paul says. “Post-secondary education is the cornerstone of this prosperity in today’s knowledge-based economy. I am very pleased to say that today’s budget recognizes this vital connection.”
Paul says the University of Windsor will work closely with the provincial government and the Council of Ontario Universities in the coming weeks to examine how this investment will translate into specific programs and initiatives for Ontario universities.
