Nature of probability subject of philosophical discussion
What does it mean to say that a proposition is probable?
Philosophy professor emeritus Robert Pinto, senior fellow of the Centre for Research in Reasoning, Argumentation, and Rhetoric, will consider this question in his free public lecture, Understanding Probably, today at 4 p.m. in the lounge of Parker House, 105 Sunset Avenue.
Dr. Pinto explores the role of expectations in appraising probabilities.
"I reverse the order of explanation and try to understand believing that P is probable by appealing to the idea of believing that it is reasonable to expect that P," he says.
