Comedy show a benefit for Haitian relief
Laughter is the best way to deal with any kind of pain, says David Robbins-Singh.
The first-year student has organized Stand-up for Haiti, a comedy show tonight in the Basement Pub to benefit victims of the earthquake that devastated the Caribbean country in January. Robbins-Singh will emcee the evening and has assembled a line-up of local talent that includes Dale "Big Daddy" Mellon, Hannah Rose, Coopie, and Jim McLuckie.
An aspiring comic himself, Robbins-Singh has performed in venues around town under the stage name "Squeaky Wheelz." His act incorporates jokes about his use of a wheelchair due to the congenital disorder arthrogryposis, which limits his movement.
He says he finds comedy therapeutic, and hopes to apply the same medicine to Haiti.
"My personal philosophy is that in any tragic situation, you have to find humour," says Robbins-Singh.
Admission to Stand-up for Haiti is $5; doors open at 7 p.m. The Basement Pub is located in the CAW Student Centre.
