Forum to highlight lawyers working for social justice
A forum next week at the Windsor law school will introduce students to the challenges and rewards of foregoing private practice for a career engaged in social justice work.
Justice at Work: Bridging Education, Employment and Experiences is set for Monday, March 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., in the Moot Court. It will feature Windsor Law alumni and other lawyers working with issues related to human rights, labour, race, gender, children, poverty, and refugees.
Law professor Emily Carasco says that while many lawyers pursue social justice goals in private practice and the public sector, the forum will highlight career options in non-traditional arenas, including unions, community clinics, non-governmental organizations, and advocacy groups.
"It is our hope that the personal narratives, the challenges and the rewards experienced by these lawyers will provide students with ideas about options for their own future careers," Dr. Carasco says.
Keynote speaker Jasteena Dhillon, currently a fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, previously worked for NATO and the Canadian Forces. The event is free and open to the community.
