One week left to apply for distance communications research funding

There is still time to apply for minor research funding to assist contact at a distance with possible international and development partners, says earth sciences professor Frank Simpson, the university's coordinator of International and Development Research, Education and Training (IDRET).

The funds would contribute to such communications as long-distance telephone calls (person-to-person, conference), video-conferencing and the faxing of documents—for example, needs assessments, drafts of funding proposals, publicity releases—for which the use of e-mail would not be appropriate.

Interested faculty and staff should obtain the approval of the head of their respective departments before communicating with the overseas contacts. They should provide an assessment of the approximate cost and a short general statement of objective, no more than 50 words. The statement should indicate how the intended communication is likely to be a milestone event in the contact with the possible partners.

The AAU head, in turn, will obtain approval from the IDRET coordinator. Charges would be covered by the departmental budget initially, then replaced through a budget transfer. The deadline for the submission of proposals is 5 p.m. on Friday, March 26. Please send comments to Dr. Simpson at 519-253-3000, ext. 2487, fax 519-973-7081, e-mail franks@uwindsor.ca.
