Faculty opening doors to first-year students

Marissa Rossi was afraid she wouldn't be able to find her classes today.

"I came to Head Start, so I feel I have a lot of information," said the Kennedy Collegiate grad, who is beginning first year studies in social work. "I need to know more basic things—what to bring on the first day, how to locate my classes."

She'll be taking a tip that Betty Barrett, an assistant professor of women's studies and social work, imparted during a program orientation session yesterday morning: locate each class on her schedule well in advance.

Dr. Barrett was one of a number of faculty members to address first-year students during the session, discussing everything from academic counselling and support services to course syllabi, from library and research resources to career opportunities.

Brent Angell, director of the School of Social Work, told the students that they will get out of university only as much as they put into it.

"We really want you to be part of the learning process," he said. "We can open the door, but it is up to you to walk through the door."

Carissa Miklos said she found the session helpful in her transition to university: "It's nice just to be on campus and get back to things a little bit."
