Windsor forward named Canadian rookie of the year
Jessica Clemençon received the Kathy Shields Award as rookie of the year at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport banquet for women's basketball, last night in Hamilton.
The 6-foot-3 post player was nothing short of sensational in her first season with the Lancers, as she finished among the provincial leaders in almost every major statistical category—sixth in scoring with 15.6 points per game, eighth in rebounding with 7.3 per game, fourth in both field goal (49.5) and free throw (80.2) percentage, and eighth in blocked shots with 26.
Clemençon, who came to Windsor from Saint-Rambert, France, was the only rookie named to the OUA West first all-star team.
“We are very fortunate that Jessica decided to attend the University of Windsor, as we knew we were getting a great post player who could make an immediate impact,” said Windsor head coach Chantal Vallée. “She adjusted very well to Canada and exceeded our expectations. She is fiercely competitive, as well as a great student and a very well-rounded person. Her impact on our program’s success this year has been tremendous and we look forward to her continued growth in the years to come.”
Other CIS major award winners announced last night were Simon Fraser forward Robyn Bruna, who was named player of the year; her teammate Katie Miyazaki, who was named the nation’s top defensive player; coach of the year Brian Cheng of the University of Victoria; Manitoba’s Michele Hynes, honoured for her excellence in basketball, academics, and community involvement; and McGill’s Anneth Him-Lazarenko, who claimed the Tracy MacLeod award recognizing determination and perseverance.
