Science boasts of perfect blend for success

Mike Fuerth says what he enjoys most about working as a technician in the chemistry department's nuclear magnetic resonance lab is watching the students.

"I get to work with the cream of the crop," says Fuerth. "It's interesting to see how they develop during their time here. Graduates of the University of Windsor have gone on to do some pretty amazing things."

Fuerth, a graduate of the University of Windsor himself (BSc chemistry, 1966), received the Staff Meritorious Service Award on Friday at the Faculty of Science Celebration of Success.~

About 200 faculty, staff and students filled Winclare Hall A for the event. Now in its eighth year, it recognizes the accomplishments of the faculty over the past year, and is timed to coincide with the publication of the faculty's annual report.

Among the successes cited by dean of science Richard Caron were: $8.12 million in new research funding, two provincial teaching award winners, two national awards for science researchers, a winner of the Premier’s Catalyst Award for Innovation, and three major student recognition awards for scholastic achievement and community involvement.

In keeping with the theme of the event—"a perfect blend for success"—attendees received specially-designed Faculty of Science coffee mugs, which reflected some aspect of coffee from the perspective of each of its departments, a package of premium blend coffee and an individualized coffee coaster.

A number of individuals were honoured with awards, including:
  • faculty performance awards to Daniel Heath, Arunita Jaekel, Charles Macdonald, Chitra Rangan, and Robert Schurko for contributions in research, teaching and service
  • teaching awards recognizing instructors given the highest evaluation scores by students in each department
