Child Study Centre: Facilities and Research
Facilities
The Child Study Centre was established in 1986 to provide CC students with facilities and resources for clinical training and research on campus. The Centre is located in a three-room suite in the Psychology Department. Room 273 is a large multi-purpose room with furnishings and supplies that permit its use for a variety of teaching and clinical training activities. Room 273 is equipped with two curtained one-way mirrors which permit observation of test administrations and therapy sessions from either Room 271-1 or Room 273-1.
The Child Study Centre provides the following:
1. Assessment. As part of their academic and pre-internship training, students are expected to master a wide variety of child cognitive and personality/behavior tests, as well as effective clinical interviewing and behavior observation skills. The Child Study Centre provides access to a full range of testing supplies and physical settings which can be arranged to comfortably accommodate testing of children of all ages, parent interviews, or family assessments.
2. Interventions. The CC students are exposed to a broad range of therapeutic modalities and receive pre-internship experience through course-related practica, and the Child Study Centre provides settings appropriate to different types of interventions. Room 273 is a bright, stimulating setting stocked with various toys and art supplies useful for play therapy. This room also contains durable living room furniture appropriate for family interviews. Room 271 is used when a more formal, less stimulating setting is required, such as in interventions with distractible children, relaxation training, or individual sessions with older children or parents.
3. Videotaping. CC students have access to a video camcorder for training and research purposes. This equipment permits videotaping of clinical activities through the one-way mirrors so that students may learn from observing videotapes of their assessment and therapy sessions. The equipment is also available to CC students and faculty for research activities.
4. Research Lab. The research Lab in room 271-1 offers computing & data storage facilities, as well as observation of room 273. |
