PHYSICS

Honours Physics and High Technology: Co-op Option

The Co-operative Education Program offers students the opportunity to combine their classroom experiences with related work experiences. Students who apply and are accepted to the Co-operative Education Program must successfully complete three paid work experiences interspersed throughout the four-year Honours program. The experience gained while participating in theses structured and supervised work placements is viewed as an integral component of the student's educational program.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

Physics and High Technology Co-op students must maintain full-time academic status and satisfy the following:
(a) Must maintain a minimum cumulative average of 6.0, and;
(b) Must maintain a minimum major average of 8.0, and;
(c) Must not have more than one outstanding F on their transcript.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Total courses: forty-three courses

Major requirements: sixteen courses, including 64-140, 64-141, 64-151, 64-220, 64-222, 64-250, 64-310, 64-311, 64-320, 64-323, 64-350, 64-431, 64-450, 64-460, 64-484, and 64-496.

Other requirements:
(a) 59-140, 59-141, 59-240, 60-140 (or 60-106), 60-141 (or 60-205), 62-120 (or 62-125), 62-140 (or 62-139), 62-141, 62-215, 62-216, 62-318, 62-360, 85-214, 88-217 or 60-265.

(b) 70-151 or 75-100, plus two other Science or Engineering courses, excluding those courses that cannot be used to fulfill the major requirements in Science and Engineering programs. Alternatively, 70-151 and 75-100, plus one other Science or Engineering courses, excluding those courses that cannot be used to fulfill the major requirements in Science and Engineering programs. Students who intend to take additional mathematics courses are advised to take 62-190 in first year. Students planning for a Minor in Computer Science should take 60-140.

(c) three co-op terms: 64-298, 64-398, 64-498, (oral and written reports required), plus an optional work term following the second semester of the first year. Students must maintain an honours average (G.P.A. 8.0 or greater) to qualify for co-op placements.

(d)five additional B.Sc., B.A.Sc., or B.Comm. credit courses at the 200 level or higher in Science, Engineering, or Business Administration that are approved by the Physics Head or delegate.

(e) two of Arts (01-), Social Sciences (02-), and/or Business Administration (04).

RECOMMENDED COURSE SEQUENCE

First Year: ten courses, including 59-140, 59-141, 62-120 (or 62-125), 62-140 (or 62-139), 62-141, 64-140, 64-141, 64-151, and two options, followed by an optional summer work term.

Second Year: ten courses, including, 62-215, 62-216, 62-318, 64-220, 64-222, 64-250, 64-320, 85-214, 88-217 or 60-265., and one option (60-140, if taking 60-265), followed by a summer Co-op work term.

Third Year: five fall courses, including 59-240, 62-360, 64-323, 64-350, and one option, Winter co-op work term; five summer courses, including 60-140 or 60-106, 60-141 or 60-205, 64-310, 70-151 or 75-100 and one option.

Fourth Year: fall co-op work term; five winter courses, including 64-311, 64-460, 64-496, and two options; five summer courses, including 64-431, 64-450, 64-484, and two options.

Taking 85-133 and either 70-151 or 75-100 in year 1 should be considered. Consult a counsellor before choosing year 1 options if seeking a minor in, for example,
Business Administration, Computer Science or Economics.
