Course objectives

The major goal of this course is to provide an introduction to the theories and research in Health Psychology. Throughout this course we will explore the application of psychological factors to understanding health promotion and prevention, and illness onset, development and treatment.

Conversely, we will also examine how health influences emotional and cognitive states.
We will also investigate the interaction of psychological and biological factors through various topics including Stress and Coping, the Placebo Effect, Chronic Illness, Personality and Health, Pain, and Psychoneuroimmunology.

Some of the specific health problems we will examine to illustrate the role of psychological factors in health and illness include Cancer, Heart Disease, Chronic Pain, Diabetes, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Arthritis. We will also survey methodological issues in Health Psychology with the aim of developing critical research evaluation skills. In addition, you will have an opportunity to demonstrate these skills through the written research project.
