Linda Urquhart
Retired

Linda's mother's mother's maiden name was Davidson. Most of the Davidson genealogy was compiled by Linda's Uncle, Al Allison. He is married to Linda's mother's sister Pat. We have also had assistance from the Davidsons still living in Scotland, especially from Margarette Davidson who lives in Duns and her sisters Rachel Darling who lives in Perth and Pamela Stevenson who lives just outside of Perth in Auchterarder, Scotland. We have traced the Davidson line with certainty back to Thomas Davidson, Linda's great-great-grandfather who was born in about 1850 in Norham, in the northern part of England, just across the Scotland border on the River Tweed. Just recently I obtained an index of baptisms, marriages and burials from the Norham and Cornhill registers. As well I obtained cemetery inscriptions from cemeteries in Norham. Based on a thorough investigation it appears that in some instances the Davidson name was recorded as Davison. The baptismal registration for Thomas was under Davison yet his marriage and cemetery inscription is listed as Davidson. From this additional information I am presenting a "possible" ancestor for Thomas, that being William Davidson from Whittingham, Northumberland. More research is required to strengthen this speculation but I present it here for observation.

Notes for Mary Cowe Davidson:
Mary Cowe Murray nee Davidson was know to her grandchildren as DeeDee.

DeeDee immigrated to Canada alone with her 2 daughters to meet with her husband who had already settled in Windsor, Ontario. They arrived in 1925 and soon found themselves living in a severe depression. DeeDee never worked outside the home but had to manage with very little. After her husband died in 1949, she had to depend on her daughters for support. She continued to live on Caron Ave until Betty and Pat were married. Then in the 1950's she moved in with Harry and Peggy Laing and their 2 children, Jerry and Linda.

They lived on Ellrose avenue in the east end of Windsor in a wartime home, 1 and 1/2 stories with 3 bedrooms. Harry and Peggy had the bedroom on the main floor and Jerry shared his upstairs bedroom with his grandfather Art Laing and Linda shared her upstairs bedroom with DeeDee. There was only one bathroom. With her mother living with her, Peggy was able to return to work to help out the family finances. With these additional monies Harry and Peggy were able to take yearly vacations with their children and buy many things that they were not have been able to afford without this second income.
DeeDee did most of the cooking for the family and spoiled Jerry and Linda by making them separate meals that they preferred instead of making them eat what the rest of the family was eating.

She loved to knit and all the grandchildren received hand knitted socks, gloves and scarfs every Christmas.

She had diabetes and had to inject herself with insulin. She had complications with open sores on her feet due to the diabetes and her doctor threatened to remove her feet many times if she did not cut down on her sugar. Unfortunately she was a great cook and always baked tremendous desserts for her family. Every year she sent a large package of goodies to her sisters and sister-in-law in Scotland.

She was able to return to Scotland in the 1950's when her sister was ill and that was her last visit to her homeland. She missed her family and her country very much and kept all the Scottish traditions alive in our families.

She was diagnosed with stomach cancer and spent two weeks in the hospital before she died. It was a shock to Jerry and Linda to lose her since she was like a second mother to them. Peggy spent a week in bed after her mother died due to the strain of her funeral. Peggy had tried to keep back the tears for the sake of her younger sisters since that was what was expected but the strain of that caught up with her. DeeDee is sadly missed but left to mourn her a family that is very close even these 40 years later.
