Linda Urquhart
Retired

Linda's father's (Harry Laing) mother's maiden name was Lulu Parsons. Her father was Samuel Parsons who was born in England in 1853 and married in Ontario. His first two children were born in Ontario but his last four were born in the United States. Lulu (Linda's grandmother) married her husband (Arthur Garfield Laing) when the family was living in Ridgetown but they moved to Detroit early in their marriage and their children, including Linda's father, were all born in the US.
Linda obtained most of this early ancestor information from Alison Parsons of New Zealnd, who has researched the Parsons line back to Richard Parsons.

Descendants of Richard Parsons

Generation No. 1

1. Richard1 Parsons1 died 1681 in Kington Magna, Dorset, EN1. He married Elizabeth1.

Notes for Richard Parsons:
Richard Parsons may well have been old enough for service in the Civil War; certainly in the second one, to overthrow Cromwell's regime he would have been active, coming as he did from the West Country.
Since the John Fox scroll was carried by the Parsons family for some 400 years, it might have been that Richard Parsons married into the property as a millowner. He did not own enough land to be called "yeoman".
The will of Richard Parsons is dated May 30, 1681.
He leaves a property called 'Target Sivening' in Churton to his son George and after him, to George's son, also George. [Note from Diane Colgrave: Churton was probably Cheriton which lies near Wincanton and North Cheriton]
To Richard Parsons he leaves an acre which lies in Batchpoole for ever upon condition to pay tenne pounds in tenne years to his grandson Henry Parsons, son of Francis Parsons.
To Francis he leaves the mortgage of Joseph Cogrell's house in Frome Selwood, also 11 acres of ground in Frome, "with the house which I have in Wincalnton' for the term of his natural life. [Note from Dianne Colgrave's booklet called the History of the Family of Parsons-Peters: Wincanton lies on the river Calne hence the awkward 'l' in the old spelling]. After Francis it goes to John Parsons and finally back to George.
In his will he mentions his son and grandson both named Richard. Richard is named as executor but it does not say which one.
The will was declared invalid and a sentencing had to be carried out in Court. The dispute was whether or not the son Richard or the grandson Richard would inherit. Judgement was given to Richard the son.
When Richard dies he is living in Kington Magna but does not mention it in his will. Therefore he did not own that property. His second wife already owned the Kington Magna property. Moses inherited the Kington Magna property from his mother

Notes for Elizabeth:
Elizabeth might be descended from John Fox, Gentleman of Chacumbe, Northampshire. the clue is a little parchment scroll, three inches wide and about seven feet long, dated 1592. At sometime it was carried from Northants to Dorset and then to Somerset, being kept in the Parsons family for more than 400 years.
It is an inventory of the goods, chattels and debts of this John Fox. From it we see his owning considerable farm and household implements. The fact that he listed as a gentleman means that he owned the property.

Notes for George Parsons:
George Parsons was a tenant of the Manor House from the Wingfield Digbys, Charlton Horethorne by 1817 followed later by his son Uriah and grandson Weston Peters Parsons. On 25 Nov 1827 the Duke of Rutland and Colonel Wingfield Digby signed a deed conveying much property in the village to the Parsons family. The sale price was 15,500 pounds and the Parsons family then became lords of the manor. The farmhouses with cottages, buildings and land became known as Manor Farm, in total 477 acres and included two cottages with their gardens and also the vicar's house.

It would appear from the details recorded on the family vault that George and Jane had many children including five sons who died in infancy and another son William died age 11. We do not have birth dates of the first 5 children, doubtless born at West Stour. Their death dates and ages are recorded on a Chest Tomb in Charlton Horethorne churchyard, standing over the family vault. Also 5 others, unnamed, who died in infancy.

The deceased lady has been for the last 15 years a highly respected citizen of Ingersoll, her devoted Christian life and many kindly deeds having endeared her to all with whom she came in contact, and her memory will long be cherished, not only by the family, but by a large circle of friends. Mrs. Parsons retained full possession of her faculties until a few days ago, when she was taken with la grippe, which was followed by paralysis, causing her death. Notes for Sarah Case:
Sarah was baptised in 1819 at the Wesleyan church shaftesbury and married in 1841 Motcombe to John Parsons, farmer of Tout Hill Motcombe. Sarah was the daughter of George Case, Cheese dealer of Enmore Green. John Parsons died in 1868 aged 59 leaving his widow Sarah in poverty with 6 children. Two of their sons George and Freeborn, were raised with their cousins at Manor Farm, Charlton Horethorne.

At the time of the 1871 England census Sarah was head of the family and daughters Ellen, Emily, Mary, and son John were living with her. Sarah also had a visitor staying at that time named Elizabeth Hall and her grand-daughter Jane Hammond was also staying with the family. Jane b 1869 was the eldest daughter of Jane Hammond nee Parson's Sarah's second daughter. At that time Sarah had a farm of 700 acres employing 11 man 5 women and 6 boys. They have a farm bailiff living with them.

Sarah remarried in 1871 to William Haine of Southmead Farm. Margaret Theodora Haine of Limington Somerset in 1950 wrote: To return to Wm Haine of Southmead, his first wife died and left him with many children - later he met a Mrs Parsons, widow with many children also. This couple imagined each other wealthy and each fancied the other's property. They married in 1871 - and at the church door were met with creditors! Forever after they and all the children lived a cat and dog life. In the end a separate house still standing [1950] was taken for the [four] Parsons children by now grown up. There are none of the Parsons left now" Southwood Farm had been taken over by William's nephew Maby Look. The Haine family and William's new wife Sarah Parsons left Northover for Cadbury Cottage, North Cadbury (230 acres 1881) where they stayed only a few years. Their final home was at West Camel where William was both farmer and Methodist lay preacher. The Western Gazette records his death at West Camel 1906 "Death of Mr Haine. There passed away on Saturday, at the age of 88, one of the oldest agriculturists in this district in the person of Mr. William Haine. Deceased who regularly attended Yeovil market until quite recently, was known far and wide amongst the farmers of the West Country, and was greatly respected by all. A widow and sons and daughters survive him to mourn their loss."
Sarah then moved to Weymouth to be with her children and at the time of making her will Sarah was living at 30 Dorchester Road, Weymouth and it is dated 12 Sep 1906. Sarah may have moved from West Camel not long after her second husband William died in January. John Taylor, coachman of Grove Lodge, Weymouth, witnessed Sarah Case Parsons/Haines will in 1906. The bequests in the will show that she was not wealthy. She mentioned an oil painting of herelf, various pictures of her first husband and of her father, the big rocking chair which her husband Mr Haine gave her and many things that she had knitted for her children.

Notes for Elizabeth Mary Merefield Donne:
The Easons and Donnes were families from Crewkerne, Merriott and other places spreading right through the County of Somerset.
Justin Donne was the mother of John Eason who held land in Barrington from 1650 to 1720. In his will he left the lands in South Petherton and Barrington to his son Andrew.
We do not know the name of the first wife of Thomas Peters of West Stour, grandfather of John Weston Peters. If dshe was a Donne, \John Eason would have had a blood relationship via Justin Donne to the marriage of Henry Parsons and so to John Weston Peters, which would account for John Weston being his chosen heir.

Notes for Uriah Peter Parsons:
Western Gazette 25 Nov 1887, Charlton Horethorne, Uriah Pasrsons had been out, shooting with his son Weston and nephew [Hole]. On the way back in the evening they called at the dairy house. Weston entered to fix labels to some packages, returned to the carriage, took the reins and proceded to drive home. Uriah entered the pony carriage at the dairy house and seated himself beside the loaded guns as they were hoping to shoot further on the journey home. Uriah turned to ask Hole, who was walking by the pony, to get addresses of parcels form the house and accidentally touched the trigger which fired shattering his arem. "Oh what was that? I am shot in the arm. Never mind, look to the pony." He died just before midnight from shock and loss of blood. "My father was 64", said Weston at Saturday's inquest. The coroner ruled accidental death and remarked on the carelessness of Hole for not keeping his firearms in better order. [Source: David Walsh, London; descendant of Mary Ann Marshall Tabor]

Freeborn received a letter from Uncle Uriah on 17 Dec 1887. At that stage Freeborn was unaware of Uriah's tragic death. On 11 Jan 1888 Freeborn wrote in his diary "George came up this evening and told us of the death of Uncle Uriah which happened by an accident through a gun going off and blowing his arm nearly off." Freeborn wrote to Aunt Uriah (Mary Ann) in February with his condolences.

Uriah was the executor of the Wills of his father in 1845, brothers 1860 and 1868.

Uriah inherited his father's property which he built up considerably until his tragic death. Uriah's older brothers had either left the country or were not interested in farming. It is said that Uriah had a good head on his shoulders and a healthy physique. He not only ran the farm well, but went on to enlarge the property and built up a sizeable estate. {as per Diana Colgrave}

He married (1) Elisabeth Mary Walter. She was born Abt. 1845 in Combe St Nicholas, Somerset, EN164, and died 1873165. He married (2) Elizabeth Matthew.

Notes for William Parsons Peters:
William Parsons changed his name to William Parsons Peters in 1858 and later inherited the estate at Yeabridge and took the arms of John Weston Peters at South Petherton, Somerset, EN. Yeabridge Farms was composed of 256 acres plus outlying properties.
He retired to Bath for the last five years of his life after the disastrous destruction of his pedigree herd by foot-and-mouth disease. He died in 1902, having leased Yeabridge House to Robert Blake and the farm to William Hebditch till 1917. His son, John Weston Parsons Peters could not take up his position as Lord of the Manor until that year.

Of the acreages he received from John Weston Peters only Yeabridge made a compact farm. Lambrook was 2 miles away in one direction, Barrington 3 miles in another, neither was viable on its own. He quickly bought Hayes End with 142 acres which was better situated at only a mile from Yeabridge.

William had to pay 500 pounds per annum to Julia Gale continuing to her children as well as 550 pounds per annum to John Weston Peter's widow who outlived him by 17 years, another 100 pounds per annum to John Weston Peter's widowed sister, and another 500 pounds per annum to another sister. These large sums of money were suppose to come from the prifits of both the Bridge Farm and Yeabridge Farm but without Bridge Farm trustees were forced to sell or mortgage in order to raise any shortfall from the Yeabridge farm's profits.

William had to be in close contact with Yeabridge Farm but he could not live at the house since John Weston Peter's widow continued to live there. Instead he lived in the poky little dairy house a few yards down the road., there his four children were born.

He lived through the Great Agricultural Depression and ploughed up his arable and set it to pasture. He raised a splendid herd of Red Devon beef cattle, known all over the county for prizes won at the local shows. The whole herd had to be slaughtered due to foot and mouth disease. It is said that when the authorities arrived he stood behind his barred gate with his gun at the ready; he did not use it; it was a symbol of his utter rage and despair; after all the years and eventual success, to find all gone in a single day. Those cattle were both his income and his investment capital. This final tragedy broke him[Diana Colgrave]

His will showed that he had no free money other than a legacy of 100 pounds a year to his widow and some other minor ones. the value of his personal estate was 5467 pounds and his estate value was 36,882 pounds.

Notes for Mark Parsons:
From West Country Genealogy
Story of Mark Parsons
I was born at South Cheriton, a small hamlet on the parish of Horsington, on the twenty-fifth of April 1837, and was the eldest child of Meschach and Elizabeth Parsons. Until I was eight years old my life was that of an ordinary child. I was baptized in the Parish Church at Horsington and joined their Sunday School when I was six years old; but in 1845 a Wesleyan Methodist Sunday School was opened at Cheriton so I joined that; there I learnt to read. The same year I began regular work at Hull Farm, South Cheriton for 1s.6d. a week. I was there for eight years, and then I went to Ringclose Farm, Horsington Marsh, for one and a half years at 4s.6d.

Cheriton House was my next place, where I stayed five years at 5s. till I was over twenty. Those were hard times, and more than once have seen a fellow boy-worker frighten away the half-mad dog, that he might steal the animal’s dinner.

In the summer I began mowing and reaping, and draining with my father in the winter. The first summer I mowed I was about eighteen years old, and went to Fisherton-Delamore, in Wiltshire. I was there over six weeks with my uncle and cousin, and we slept in a barn with Six Irish “taskers,” whose kindness I have never forgotten........

The spring before this incident I was with my father throwing timber at Wilkanthroop Corner, when the first train ran on the London and South Western Railway, from London to Exeter. We could see it come out of Buckhorn Weston tunnel from the field in which we were working.

Between the reaping and draining time, in the Autumn, I worked in the Market Gardens at South Cheriton.

I joined the Wesleyan Church at Cheriton, and it was not long before I had the chance to testify. Captain Bailward’s grandfather, at one time, had me out with him marking timber, and he wanted me to tell him what conversion meant, because he had heard of my decision. I told what it had meant for me, and when I had finished, he said, “If that is conversion, I have never known it; and there are others in higher circles of religious life, Mark, who could not have explained it like that.

Two years after my conversion I had a note from the superintendent minister (Rev. Alexander Puddicombe) that I was recommended to be placed on “trial” at the lay preachers meeting, Christmas, 1846. I was two years on trial, taking services all over the circuit (and I always walked), witnessing conversion here and there. At the end of the two years I passed my examination in company with two others, (E. Trowbridge of Holwell and J. Hannam of Sherborne). I was very closely examined on the doctrines of our Church, on the Methodist Second Catechism, and Wesley’s notes. I preached my trial sermon before the minister and three local preachers (G. Strickland, G. Hewlett, and J. Barrett).

Before the chapel was built at South Cheriton the services were held at Pavlings House, Mutton Hill, the residence of John Pitman. In the summer of 1844 they held an open air service in his orchard; Mr. Smith was the preacher, and though I was quite young, I remember carrying our Bible up from my fathers house. While the chapel was being built, the Rev. Alex. Puddicombe preached on the ground wall.

After the new church was opened, for years Mr. Jesse Dodimead from Corton Denham was appointed once every quarter; he always began the afternoon service with the Hymn,”Father of me and all mankind”.

In the summer following my examination I went to Wiltshire, a place near Tisbury, harvesting. While I was there the Methodists got to hear of me, and asked me to take a service in that church, but I declined, offering instead to take one in the open air. It was held in the quarries, and I was rather troubled because when I went harvesting I never took my best clothes with me; but though they said they would find me a suit for the service I said I would rather take it in my smock frock. I suppose the novelty of it brought the people, for about three hundred came together in those quarries, and the singing was so hearty.

Just after my examination I was appointed to Holwell, where I met my first wife (Emily Frizzell). In her I found one of the greatest helps that any man could have. Not long afterwards I was seized with typhoid fever, and for three weeks I lay unconscious. The doctor gave up all hopes of my recovery, but in the meantime the Rev. W. Nicholson came over to Cheriton for the quarterly renewal of tickets, and in the meeting he remarked that this was too valuable a life for them to lose, and he called on them to pray that I might be restored. While they were praying the fever took a turn for the better, and I gradually recovered my strength. I was practically quite well when my mother took the fever. She was only ill about a week, she died on June-4-1865. I was married at Sherborne Wesleyan Church, by the Rev. E.Fison.

The following Autumn I went to work at Latiford House, where I stayed over fifteen years. My duties were to take charge of the cows, pigs, poultry, dogs and ferrets. One Sunday afternoon the young gentlemen came to me for the ferrets to go ratting. As I always kept them locked up, I refused; then the boys went to their father to complain, but he only said it was no more than he had expected of me.

On February-16-1867, my first child was born, a daughter; I had seven children in all, three sons and four daughters. Three are living now, one at Highbridge, one at Street, and one in my own village, who has written all this down at my dictation.

During the fifteen years at my last place I lived at North Cheriton; all at once the village day school closed and I did not know what to do with my children.
I wrote to the Educational Authorities in London, with the result that a few days later a man came from London who put a notice on the church door, saying the parish must open the school within a fortnight, or the Government themselves would open one. About this time a branch of the Labour Union was formed at Horsington, but I did not join it for six month. And as soon as I joined I was made president of the branch. I held this office till the Union was dissolved.

Just before I left Mr. Dendy’s service I lost my eldest son. I was appointed to go to Blackford on the Sunday, and when the doctor told me he could not live I felt so upset that I wandered for two hours in a large field between Maperton and Blackford. ....

My father was a road contractor, so when I left Mr. Dendy I worked on the road. At harvest time I again visited Wiltshire, to Monkton Deverill, near Warminster. While there I went to the parish church as there was no chapel. The clergyman was very evangelical, and he must have known what I was, for he invited me to conduct a service on his lawn. Again I was without any Sunday clothes, so I took it in my frock. People from all the adjoining Deverills came and we had a large congregation.

When I returned I helped my father make the new road at Horsington, and then the squire at Horsington Manor, Mr. T.H.M.Bailward asked me to come and look after the game for him, as he was out of a keeper.

When he got another keeper I “trapped” on the estate for three years, then I worked regularly in his gardens. Though Mr. Bailward was blind, he superintended the garden himself. At the end of seven years he kept a head gardener (Mark Puffett of Wincanton) who was a brother local preacher; but Mr.Bailward still watered and pruned the fruit trees with me. For thirty years, once or twice a week, we rolled the lawns together for him to have exercise. He would never roll them with anyone else. I understood draining well so when he was having the estate drained I used to go round with him, though this often brought me into trouble with the drainers and farmers. We also went over all the farms once a year to see that everything was in order.

On these rounds we used to talk of many things which must have been interesting, to say the least of it, as he was a Churchman, I a Nonconformist; he a Conservative and I a Liberal. Sometimes we had very amusing talks, but he always gave every one the liberty of his own opinions, so much so that when the Liberal candidate came to Horsington for a meeting, the chairman failing, the candidate asked Mr. Bailward to take the chair. He refused as he intended going there on purpose to ask him a number of important questions, but Mr. Bailward sugested that I should take the chair, which I did. I was one of the delegates for the East Somerset Liberal Association. In 1886, as I knew the Temperance Society wanted a piece of land on which to build a hall I told Mr. Bailward about it and asked if he could help. He suggested that the Mission Hall would do, with a few alterations, and a small landlord’s rent, but I told him we would rather have some land for our own hall. He said, “I see, you want a house of your own Mark.” Finally I suggested a piece of odd garden, which he did not know belonged to him till I proved it. He gave it to us, and that is land on which the hall now stands. He gave us the deeds free of charge, and five pounds when the hall was opened. He presided at each anniversary meeting and always subscribed. I was now living at Horsington.

On January- 2- 1891, my greatest sorrow befell me, for my wife was taken from me by the cruel hand of death. Words cannot express what I felt, she was a most devoted wife and mother, and I have never felt any sorrow so much. Over a hundred friends were present at her funeral to pay their last tribute, and two funeral sermons were preached

She was sadly missed, as she was always ready to welcome my brother local preachers and ministers to our home. In 1879 I was appointed class-leader and superintendent of the Sunday School; these duties, with the preaching, Temperance work, and my daily labour, were almost too much for me, but I was enabled to fulfil them.

I joined the Horsington Provident and Friendly Society when it first formed, and am still on the committee. When it was started there were only twenty-eight members, now we have about ninety. In September, 1892, I married my present wife. I never had an illness after I had typhoid fever, till December 1907, when I had to go into hospital at Templecombe. The doctor thought an operation would be necessary, but he found it was not after all. I was there three weeks; which included Christmas, and it was one of the happiest times of my life. All the nurses were so kind, and Lady Guest visited us several times. When I left hospital I stayed at home for a week and then returned to my usual work. Just before my illness I lost another true friend, my masters butler, T.Vile. For thirty years we had been close friends; every Sunday morning we made it a point to have a talk about better things, and his death meant a great sorrow in my life.

Our superintendent minister (Rev.R.Maynard) presented me with silver Local Preacher’s Medal in May 1909, with the inscription “Valiant for the truth.” How unworthy I felt when he gave it to me.

Then my dear respected master died. My duties had endeared me to him for thirty-five years, and life did not seem the same without him. I missed the log walks and talks I had with him. I am still working at the Manor for my late master’s eldest son, Captain J. Bailward, for whom I receive great kindness. The gardener and caretaker are also very kind to me. Now I am growing old, I have had visions of the Heavenly City, and when I think that that will be my future Home, it is almost too much for me. You know I am a bit of a visionary.

Mark Parsons.

After Marian's death he moved into the Manor, and moved out again in 1941 in favour of his son John Newton. John continued till 1986 when he died childless from cancer. He married Agnes Diana Howard Rodie Thompson, daughter of George Thompson and Alice Barber. She was born 1881 in Lynwood Sunningdale, Berks, and died 1958.

Notes for William Parsons Peters:
William Parsons Peters also disappeared from the scene for some 18 years having gone to Columbia in South America, where he with one John Jones (a relation of the Blakes) started a plantation for coffee and cocoa.
The disappearance of the two sons from Yeabridge may have been due, at least partly, to the fact that their mother died when John Weston was nine and William five, and their father re-married and there was a very unhappy relationship with their stepmother.
William Parsons Peters, the younger, inherited his father's real property but did not return from Columbia until two years after his father's death to take up his inheritance. He inherited the Yeabridge property and the Hayes End Manor House. He lived at Yeabridge House until 1923 when they moved to Hayes End manor. After leaving Yeabridge House it was let to a Colonel Heard and then it was sold and passed through various hands now under the ownership of Mr T H R Poole.
The farm and its land was sold in the mid-twenties to Mr Frank Broughton the then tenant as also to others the various cottages and small holdings except Days Farm, Lower Stratton which in 1951 was sold as was Hayes End manor and lands on the death of William Parsons Peters, the younger.

It is said that after so many years in the tropics, the English winter laid him low. He was often confined to his bed with sciatica; it took him years to recover.

His first occupation when they moved to Hayes End was to enlarge and complete the house which he did by using his artistic talents, not simply building on but using his own plans to make the house seem to just grow. He rethatched the front of the house and brought in the great barn at the back to form a square round a courtyard planted with rosebeds. The barn became the billiard room and later Diana Colgrave's studio.

As Lord of the manor he had a special relationship with the cottagers. He was a respected and trusted Justice of the Peace. In spite of inflation he never raised his rent for 20 years. He sold Yeabridge House and the Farm to the then tenant and the labourer's cottage on the estate back to their occupants for 24 pounds each. A few years after his death they fetched near 20,000 pounds apiece. He had saved Barrington and Yeabridge but he could not save Hayes End. After his death the rents were doubled and was eventually sold out to developers who have destroyed it making a complex of poky rabbit hutch flats for retired people. the house has been gutted and changed out of character; even the thatch on the front facade replaced by tiles.[all of the above are excerpts from the book, A Brief History of the Parsons-Peters Family by Diana Colgrave]

Notes for Agnes Diana Howard Rodie Thompson:
Agnes Diana Howard Thompson had no formal education but was possessed of a keen intelligence and a lively sense of humour and indomitable spirit. She came from a well to do family and enjoyed plenty of servants. She continued with this lifestyle while living at Yeabridge. But after the first world war, everything changed, there were no live-in servants to be had. She adapted to this situation but refused to cook. But she did learn to drive a car and drove her children everywhere.

She had a terrible fall in the barn and broke her back but refused to let her family know ( her husband was 80 and needed her) and lived the rest of her life with a great deal of pain. After her husband's death, Hayes End was sold and she moved to a smaller house in the village, much less isolated. [excerpts from the book by Diana Colgrave]
